Linguistic dissimilarity increases age-related decline in adult language learning

چکیده

Abstract We investigated age-related decline in adult learning of Dutch as an additional language (L n ) speaking, writing, listening, and reading proficiency test scores for 56,024 immigrants with 50 L1s who came to the Netherlands study or work. Performance all four skills turned out monotonically after age arrival about 25 years, similar developmental trajectories observed earlier aging research on cognitive abilities. Also, linguistic dissimilarity increased across skills, but speaking particular. measured between first languages (L1s = 50) morphology, vocabulary, phonology. Our conclusion is that L1 background influences effects learning, constraints involved reflect both biological (language ability) experience-based (acquired proficiency) resources.

Age‐related decline in BubR1 impairs adult hippocampal neurogenesis

Aging causes significant declines in adult hippocampal neurogenesis and leads to cognitive disability. Emerging evidence demonstrates that decline in the mitotic checkpoint kinase BubR1 level occurs with natural aging and induces progeroid features in both mice and children with mosaic variegated aneuploidy syndrome. Whether BubR1 contributes to age-related deficits in hippocampal neurogenesis ...

Age-related RNA decline in adult Drosophila melanogaster.

We investigated the correlation between age and total RNA levels in long-lived and control lines of Drosophila melanogaster. Total RNA was extracted at 10 ages from 1-63 days posteclosion from 3 inbred lines, with replication. Three different methods of RNA quantitation gave highly correlated estimates. Total RNA declined substantially with age, exhibiting a dramatic drop in the first few days ...

Age-Related Decline in Associative Learning in Healthy Chinese Adults

Paired associates learning (PAL) has been widely used in aging-related research, suggesting an age-related decline in associative learning. However, there are several cognitive processes (attention, spatial and recognition memory, strategy, and associative learning) involved in PAL. It is unclear which component contributes to the decline in PAL performance associated with age effects. The pres...

Applied Linguistic Approach to Language Learning Strategies (A Critical Review)

From applied linguistic point of view, the fundamental question facing the language teachers, methodologists and course designers is which procedure is more effective in FL/SL: learning to use or using to learn? Definitely, in order to be a competent language user, knowledge of language system is necessary, but it is not sufficient to be a successful language user. That is why there was a gradu...

Age-related decline in circadian output.

Disruptions in sleep/wake cycles, including decreased amplitude of rhythmic behaviors and fragmentation of the sleep episodes, are commonly associated with aging in humans and other mammals. While there are undoubtedly many factors contributing to these changes, a body of literature is emerging, suggesting that an age-related decline in the central circadian clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus...
